The First Revelation

At the age of about forty, Muhammad ﷺ frequently retreated to the cave of Hira on the mountain of Light near Makkah to reflect and worship. There, during the month of Ramadan, the Angel Jibril appeared and revealed the first verses of the Quran: Read in the name of your Lord who created… (96:1).

Trembling and awed, he returned to Khadijah, who comforted and reassured him. She took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a learned man, who confirmed that he had received the same revelation that came to earlier prophets.
